Yes, it’s another week of social distancing and isolation. But that doesn’t mean you cannot stay engaged, connected and in exploration mode. The following are four ways you can have fun, learn new skills and expand your horizons – even start a business!
By now, you’ve probably heard of Etsy, where crafters, artists, and other small businesses sell their handmade and vintage products such as earrings, necklaces (such as the crochet rose necklace pictured here), hats, custom T-shirts, artwork and much more. Why not consider turning your craft or hobby into an income-generating business? You can learn how to open your own Etsy shop and sell your goods online.
The Scarsdale Adult School has worthy online offerings across a variety of categories including Computer Skills and Technology, Fitness and Dance, Health and Wellness, and Music Appreciation, among many others. But if you’re looking to discuss topics of the day, take a look at their Let’s Talk Current Events course, offered on the Zoom platform (no worries on how to get started with Zoom – all you’ll need to do is click through on a link). Here’s their description – you may be in for some lively conversation: Engage in stimulating conversation with a group of curious, well-informed and friendly news junkies. Meet each week to discuss a variety of challenging topics, including popular culture, politics, media issues and other items in the news — at the local, national and international levels. Bring your observations and an open mind. The round-table discussions will be facilitated by cultural historian Alfred Hunt.
Consider Mastering the Art of Tomato Gardening – being offered online by the New York Botanical Garden on Thursday, April 23 from 6-9 PM. Eagle Street Farm co-founder Annie Novak covers the tips and tricks of maintaining a healthy, organic, tomato garden in raised beds on your rooftop, in containers on your balcony, or in your backyard garden. Get the knowledge you need to decide if heirlooms or hybrids are right for you. Then, learn to start plants from seed, as well as how to transplant, graft, and fertilize properly. Beginners and pros welcome!
And if you’re not a tomato lover, the NYBG has plenty of other online offerings including Flower Arranging At Home.
This is also the time for self-care and stress reduction. We all need a good dose of that! In addition to your meditative time and breathing exercises, how about a bit of pampering, which we’ve lined up for you with Mary Kay Skin Care. Contact Maria Lombard for your FREE mini spa-like escape – complete with makeover bag and virtual appointment. At absolutely no cost to you, no obligation and no purchase necessary, Maria will send you the Mary Kay skin makeover kit and then meet up with you on a Zoom video call to guide you through the skincare regimen. You can call or text her at 914-772-0518 to join in the fun. Not so sure? Check out her facebook page here and message her from there.
