We listened to County Executive George Latimer’s February 16 news conference for updates on the Covid-19 vaccine and vaccination sites. Here’s what we learned.
In addition to the state-run Westchester County Center vaccination site, where 47,212 first and second doses have been administered, two county-run locations are also in operation: at Westchester Community College and at White Plains Health Clinic.
Latimer acknowledged the frustration about being able to sign-up for a vaccine, saying the county is still waiting for a rapid increase in doses, as determined by the federal government. He did note that as more people are vaccinated, a subsequent drop in infection numbers is expected.
Additionally, he said the number of vaccines received by the state and the county should jump dramatically as we head into spring, due to (1) new product (other pharmaceutical companies) coming to market and (2) better weather conditions, allowing for the reliable transport of vaccines.
For people who have appointments at the County Center, Latimer advised NOT to come early for their scheduled appointments. People will be seen at their reserved time and arriving early simply means you’ll be waiting on line outside.
Vaccination focus is now on schools, getting teachers in the largest school districts vaccinated so they can safely go back to work. The county requested 4,000 doses to vaccinate teachers. Thus far, they’ve received 1,100.
You can call 1-833-697-4829 to schedule your vaccine at one of the New York State sites. Once on the line, ages 75 and older will be directed to a separate extension; all others are asked to remain on the line for sign up.
