The Center for Sleep Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, in Cortlandt, NY, has recently been renovated and modernized to better serve the community. Each room at the Center is now home to state-of-the-art equipment as patients stay in a hotel-like atmosphere with private bathrooms, sleep masks, high-grade cotton linens and a continental breakfast the morning after their study.
Accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Charles Abate, a board-certified sleep medicine physician leads the Sleep Center’s team, incorporating the latest diagnostic and treatment advances. Following the patient’s sleep study, a personalized treatment plan is developed to improve his/her sleep health.
Dr. Abate notes that sleep complaints are common in the older population. Sleep issues may be a consequence of normal aging, side effects from medications, or a primary sleep disorder. The most common sleep disorders among older adults include sleep apnea, chronic insomnia and restless leg syndrome.
Sleep apnea has been associated with hypertension, stroke, heart disease, cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults. Those experiencing symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, frequent awakenings, snoring, daytime fatigue and excessive daytime drowsiness, memory and cognitive impairment should speak with their physician.
