2 Commentsaarp tax help-covid update
With the COVID-19 outbreak and ensuing IRS tax filing extension until July 15, 2020, the AARP
Foundation Tax-Aide program did suspend operations on March 15. Established some 50 plus years ago, the organization has typically operated nationally and at 20 libraries throughout Westchester County from February 1 until April 15 every year.
The program has always run as an “in-person” model. Bill White, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, Westchester District Coordinator, shared with us that alternative possibilities are being evaluated, in conjunction with the IRS, for continuing service given the current epidemiological environment. For now, the program is in “wait” mode.
So far this tax season, Westchester volunteers were able to assist area residents in e-filing about 3,700 federal returns, a bit more than half the number of last year (in about half the number of scheduled days). Including answering questions and filing joint returns, about 5,250 taxpayers were helped – again, a bit more than half of last year’s number. The Tax-Aide team is hopeful they can return to help before July 15, but at this point, that’s unclear.
In general, AARP membership is not required to get help with return preparation. Taxpayers are seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
Some 100 volunteers will have learned changes to the tax code, to help prepare returns for mostly low- to middle-income taxpayers, leaning towards those over 50. Some issues are out of scope for them including Schedule C businesses with net losses, employees, depreciation, rental property, etc.
For everyone else, here’s what’s needed:
• Copy of last year’s federal & state income tax returns;
• W-2 forms showing income from your employer;
• 1099-R forms showing pension or annuity income;
• SSA-1099 forms showing Social Security benefits;
• 1099-DIV, -INT, -G, -MISC, -OID forms showing dividends, interest,NYS tax refund, gambling income, etc.;
• Health Care information received from the Marketplace, if any;
• Any other information concerning your income and deductions;
• Photo ID and Social Security/ITIN cards;
• Bank information, if direct deposit of refund desired
