Celebrate National Ice Cream Month in July with some delicious homemade flavors at one of our area’s ice cream parlors.
The Blue Pig in Croton uses only locally-sourced seasonal ingredients, so flavors come and go throughout the year. We were lucky enough to taste coconut butter finger, strawberry lemonade sorbet, coconut sorbet, vegan chocolate chip, real rum raisin, and lemon raspberry swirl (my favorite). Chocolate and vanilla are available year-round. Owner Lisa Moir suggests you call ahead for large groups. 121 Maple Street, Croton-on-Hudson; 914-271-3850; closed on Mondays; www.thebluepigicecream.com
Take a ride to Tarrytown’s Main Street Sweets where, even on a cool spring day, customers were lining up for cups and cones of homemade flavors like cupcake, creme caramel, espresso nugget and s’mores. The flavors and decor will resonate with all ages. 35 Main St., Tarrytown; 914-332-5757
Offering a variety of desserts, the Sherry B Dessert Studio is on our list because they create delicious flavors – like sweet and salty ice cream with thick ribbons of caramel and chocolate-covered pretzel chunks – and take the guilt out of it by selling $2 mini scoops. They also serve up their ice cream in cups, shakes, egg creams, floats, and ice cream sandwiches. 65 King St., Chappaqua; 914-238-8300; closed Sundays and Mondays; www.sherryb.com
If they aren’t on your list already, Longford’s Own-Made Ice Cream is as fun as the flavors: Georgia peach, coconut mounds, and chocolate caramel crackle, to name a few. Their hot fudge sundaes are a classic that won’t disappoint. 4 Elm Place, Rye; 914-967-3797; www.longfordsicecream.com. Longford’s ice cream can also be found at JJ’s Scoophouse, 315 Kear St., Yorktown Heights; 914-302-6981
And it’s worth crossing state lines to check out a Greenwich mainstay: Meli-Melo. On a recent visit, we tried the mint chocolate, encouraged by the server who insisted it was made with fresh mint leaves. After one bite, we had no reason to doubt him! Next time we’ll go for the dulce de leche. 362 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, CT; 203-629-6153; www.melimelogreenwich.com
