This is one of the mantras of older adults who have participated in Aging Alone, Together, a program offered by DOROT. This free, six-week series is designed for individuals who by choice or circumstance live without a support system traditionally provided by family. Together they build community as they learn, discuss, and reflect on the logistical and social challenges of aging with independence.
“I’m a perfect example of a solo ager,” said Marsha, longtime DOROT volunteer and co-facilitator of the series. “I’m a Boomer—75, healthy, worked all my life and live comfortably alone. I consider myself as smart as the next person, but I have not taken the time to plan for the future. Too busy doing other things—like volunteering for DOROT.”
For almost 50 years, DOROT has been a pioneer in building social connections for older adults and ensuring they have the resources to live with independence. The Aging Alone, Together workshop covers topics ranging from building or refreshing social networks, end-of-life and health care choices, and aging in place versus making a move. Each week features a video followed by a lively discussion in small group sessions. Once the program series is complete, many of the participants continue to keep in touch with one another and enjoy monthly alum gatherings.
The workshop has three mantras: (1) It’s never too early, it’s not too late; (2) You are not alone; and (3) Take charge of your aging or it will take charge of you. “As long as we kept those three mantras in the forefront of our awareness, we were able to get through some of the more challenging aspects of the topics discussed,” said Marsha.
The first workshop to be offered at DOROT Westchester’s offices in White Plains is happening over 6 weeks in May and June. The program will be offered in Westchester again in the fall. Following the prime mantra, “It’s never too early,” now is a great time to contact DOROT Westchester to find out about coming together with others for the fall series.
And if you are looking for summer opportunities to meet new people 60+, DOROT Westchester has lots to offer— monthly socials, storytelling workshops, a singing group and more. There are even options for developing connections through volunteering.
