out and about this season

One of the most beautiful times of the year in New York, now is the season to get out and about. And we’ve got just the right places to go and things to do.

Fall Crafts at Lyndhurst returns on SEPTEMBER 13 through 15. Enjoy Lyndhurst’s sprawling 67 acres before or after shopping for handmade original fashions; jewelry; works in ceramics, glass, metal, fiber, and wood; fine art; printmaking; drawing; and photography.

Food trucks, tastings from local distilleries, wineries and cider houses, along with gourmet food and specialties will all be on hand as you make your way through the event.

Admission price for ages 62 and older is $12 per person when purchased online, $15 when purchased on site. Located at 635 S. Broadway in Tarrytown, you can go to lyndhurst.org for tickets. The show is rain or shine; tickets are not refundable.

The Shirley MacLaine event series continues at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville. Up next is Sweet Charity (1969), based on the Neil Simon musical and directed by Bob Fosse, showing on SEPTEMBER 4.

The tearjerker Terms of Endearment (1983), also starring Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson, and winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress, will play on OCTOBER 2.

Then comes Postcards from the Edge (1990), showing on November 6. Based on Carrie Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel and directed by Mike Nichols, the film sends Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) from rehab to a required stay with her mother (MacLaine), and the tensions rise.

Learning in Retirement at Iona University (LIRIC), the membership organization offering courses and social activities for people of retirement age, has moved to a new location commencing with their fall session. According to LIRIC Director Suzanne Page, the group will be meeting in “a large, lovely lecture space and smaller classroom” at Temple Israel of New Rochelle.

The LIRIC Open House will be held on Monday, SEPTEMBER 16, from 1-3 PM, when attendees can meet the people running the fall courses, learn about off-campus trips, and chat over cookies and coffee.

We asked some current members to share what they like about belonging to LIRIC. Mary told us, “I’ve learned so much and met so many really nice people.” Gail says, “LIRIC is a great place to meet and make new friends, enjoy a class (without exams), take fun trips, and always have a good time.” And Arthur fondly shares, “LIRIC keeps me young!”
