scarsdale woman’s club welcomes you
Founded in 1918 to advance the cause of women’s suffrage, the Scarsdale Woman’sClub—a cultural, social and philanthropic 501C organization—keeps over 200 members connected, educationally stimulated, and engaged. The club has evolved to reflect changing times, interests and community needs.
Members come from all over Westchester and beyond, drawn to programs on art, literature and film, music, world culture and travel, home and garden, food and dining, along with other topics. Friendships are sparked in pottery, book discussion, knitting, choral singing, and personal investment groups, while a monthly technology workshop hones participants’ computer skills.
With something for everyone and programming three days each week, from September to June, members are busy venturing out together to museums, gardens, historic sites and theaters. When not pursuing their interests or discovering new ones, members can be found socializing at luncheons or games in the clubhouse (on Drake Road in Scarsdale) or at area restaurants. As part of the club’s broader educational mission, all Wednesday programs are open to the public free of charge.
When the U.S. entered World War I, the Scarsdale Woman’s Club supported Liberty Bonds and the Red Cross. After the war, the club took on publication of The Scarsdale Inquirer newspaper and ran it for 40 years. Civic-minded club members helped found such organizations as the Scarsdale Library, League of Women Voters of Scarsdale, Scarsdale/Edgemont Family Counseling Service, Scarsdale Girl Scouts and the Scarsdale Auxiliary of White Plains Hospital.
Continuing the historic focus on philanthropy, today’s club holds semiannual tag and book sales to support organizations benefiting women and children. Monthly food drives help keep a Dobbs Ferry food pantry well-stocked. Operation Bookshelf collects and sends books to schools, veterans’ organizations, and other places.
The club’s home is Rowsley, a beautiful historic mansion in Scarsdale that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rentals for weddings, recitals, and other special occasions help defray the costs of maintaining the building and grounds.
Many women enjoy finding new uses for their life and business skills, in support of the organization. Creativity and a strong volunteer spirit keep the club functioning smoothly and open to new ideas as it maintains its firm footing in the community. The club will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, September 24. For the time and more information, go to scarsdalewomansclub.org.
